Green Lantern Shows No Fear at the Box Office

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

DC Entertainment's first major release based on a DC Comics character since its formation, Green Lantern (Warner Bros.), starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard and Tim Robbins, opened relatively weak with an estimated $ 52.6 million, averaging $ 13.8k in 3,916 2D and 3D theaters. After doing more in Thursday midnights than the recent X-Men: First Class , it took in roughly $ 21.6 million on Friday but then had a substantial drop on Saturday, which doesn't bode well for any sort of long-term success.

Warner Bros. Takes on Arthur & Lancelot , Line of Sight

Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired David Dobkin's spec script Arthur & Lancelot , reports Deadline . The site says the script is a $ 90 million budgeted re-imagining of the classic tale to be directed by Dobkin. He'll also produce with Lionel Wigram, and Jeff Kleeman is executive producer.

The studio has also lined up "Halo: Reach" writer Peter O'Brien to work on the script for Line of Sight , about an elite commando squad transporting cargo while dealing with a global threat, says Heat Vision .

The site adds that Warner Bros. initially picked up the project in March as a spec script written by F. Scott Frazier for Silver Pictures, where Joel Silver and Andrew Rona are producing.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Opening Early in 3D and IMAX

Paramount Pictures has just announced that their upcoming Transformers: Dark of the Moon will offer early 3D and IMAX 3D showings at 9pm on June 28th, allowing moviegoers nationwide to be among the first to see the latest installment in the hit franchise, and the first to be shot in 3D. The movie will then open wide beginning at 12AM on June 29th.

"Michael Bay has created an incredibly engaging and immersive 3D experience with this latest movie, one that will undoubtedly be among the most entertaining movie going experiences of the summer," said Paramount's Vice Chairman Rob Moore in an official announcement, "Providing fans an opportunity to see it early in 3D is a great way to kick off the movie's opening."

Darren Aronofsky to Direct HBO's Hobgoblin

Variety reports that Darren Aronofsky ( Black Swawn ) will direct "Hobgoblin," a drama pilot in development at HBO.

The pilot will be written by Michael Chabon and his wife, Ayelet Waldman. It is about "a group of con men and magicians who use their skills of deception to help defeat Hitler and the Germans during WWII."

As was previously reported, Aronofsky is also moving forward with Noah , his epically-scaled retelling of the biblical story of Noah and his ark. The movie is said to cost about $ 130 million. John Logan is currently rewriting Aronofsky's script for the pilot.

Aronofsky, Chabon and Waldman will executive produce "Hobgoblin" with John Lesher and Adam Kassan.

This morning, ComingSoon.net was treated to a brief presentation of early conceptual art at the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas, courtesy of Relativity Media and the film's licensing agency, Striker Entertainment.

Though no photos were allowed, we are pleased to report that fans of Singh's distinctive visuals will not be disappointed. It's been 10 years since the last "Jurassic Park" movie hit theaters, but Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Mark Protosevich are now brainstorming a Jurassic Park 4 , reports Heat Vision .

Spielberg, who directed the first two films and was an executive producer on the third, has met Protosevich twice to think of a story for a potential fourth film in the franchise, the trade says.

Universal Pictures, which released the trilogy, and Spielberg's representatives are saying that a writer has not been hired and that the discussions have been "purely exploratory."

Director Thomas Hooper is going to be following up his Oscar win for The King's Speech with a big screen adaptation of the musical Les Misérables aka "Les Miz" and according to The Hollywood Reporter , actor Hugh Jackman will be headlining it, playing Jean Valjean.

Based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel, the hit Broadway musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg opened in 1985, beginning one of the longest runs for a musical ever. The governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted on Tuesday (6/14) to add a new twist to the 2011 Best Picture competition, and a new element of surprise to its annual nominations announcement. The Board voted to institute a system that will now produce anywhere between five and 10 nominees in the category. Director Jon Favreau revealed to the Los Angeles Times that Cowboys & Aliens will world premiere at the San Diego Comic-Con.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Tom Hanks' Playtone producing partner Gary Goetzman at the ScreenSingapore premiere of Larry Crowne , and they got the update on a number of projects their production company is developing including an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's best-selling novel "American Gods" as an HBO series and a movie version of the Broadway musical American Idiot based on the music of rockers Green Day. They're also in talks with long-time Hanks collaborator, director Robert Zemeckis, to possibly helm Major Matt Mason , a live action toy-to-screen project based on the Mattel action figure that will be Playtone's second 3D production.

Latest News: Sung Kang Joins Walter Hill's Next

First reported this past April, Warner Bros. is moving forward with the project formerly referred to as Headshot with Walter Hill directing and Sylvester Stallone starring. Now it has been announced that Sung Kang has joined the project as well and that the film with be jointly produced by Dark Castle Entertainment, IM Global and After Dark Films.

Set to begin production in Louisiana this month, the film is based on the graphic novel Bullet to the Head , written by Matz and illustrated by Colin Wilson, it tells the story of a New Orleans hitman (Stallone) and a New York City cop who form an alliance to bring down the killers of their respective partners.

The project will re-team Stallone with producer Joel Silver, who worked with him on Demolition Man and Assassins ....
